From childhood His Royal Highness learned to read and write while excelling in religious knowledge and knowledge of the Royal Ceremonial Customs of the State of Kelantan. His royal Highness was educated at the Sultan Ismail College and also received special coaching from an English teacher to expand his knowledge of other important subjects.
Tuanku Ismail Petra has always been very popular and has always kept in close contact with his subjects.
Tuanku Ismail Petra had on numerous occasions accompanied his late father to ceremonial gatherings within the State.
In 1962, His Royal Highness visited Thailand and in 1966 he made visits to Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
His Royal Highness later visited Europe and America. These visits provided His Royal Highness with wide knowledge and a lot of experience in foreign diplomacy and foreign cultures.
His Royal Highness was installed as the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan by his late father on November 11, 1967. The marriage ceremony between His Royal Highness the Tengku Mahkota and Her Royal Highness Tengku Anis, the Tengku Ampuan Mahkota then took place on December 4, 1968, at Istana Kota Lama. As a result of this union, His Royal Highness was blessed with three sons and a daughter.
His Royal Highness, the Tengku Mahkota showed keen interest in all matters concerning the State Administration. From April 1968 His Royal Highness commenced work at the State Secretariat and also at the Kota Bharu Land Office for the purpose of fulfilling this interest.
In order to gauge the many projects of the government, His Royal Highness has on numerous occasions unofficially attended meetings and gatherings of Heads of Departments in Kota Bharu or in the other Districts. His Royal Highness was also present at several projects implemented in the State.
His Royal Highness has shown a keen interest in Youth activities and sports. His involvement in the opening ceremony of the Interact Club Week of Sultan Ismail College proved that.
His Royal Highness also likes reading books and shows great interest in the arts.
On November 1, 1974, His Royal Highness was presented with the “TAULIAH DI-RAJA KEHORMAT” in the Rejiment Askar Wataniah holding the rank of Major. On January 1, 1967, His Royal Highness was promoted to the rank of Honorary Lt. Col. in Rejiment Askar Wataniah.
His Royal Highness was appointed three times as Regent by his late father His Royal Highness Al-Sultan Yahya Petra ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim.
The first occasion was from July 6 to July 25, 1974, when Sultan Yahya Petra left for Kuala Lumpur as Timbalan Agong (Deputy King) to exercise the duties of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King).
The second occasion was from July 12 until August 28, 1975, when his late father Sultan Yahya Petra visited Europe.
The third occasion was when Al-Marhum Sultan Yahya Petra, Sultan of Kelantan was appointed as the Sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.
On the untimely demise of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Yahya Petra on March 29, 1979, His Royal Highness Tengku Ismail Petra ascended the throne of Kelantan. The Coronation of His Royal Highness as the Sultan of Kelantan took place on March 30, 1980.
During the days as Regent of Kelantan and now as the Sultan of Kelantan, His Royal Highness made efforts to visit all the Districts in the State. It is through these visits that His Royal Highness looked into the welfare of His subjects. His Royal Highness’ concern for His subjects resulted in a special bond between His Royal Highness and His subjects.
