


Galas by-election: It's a two-way contest between BN and PAS

GUA MUSANG: The Galas state by-election on Nov 4 will see a straight fight between Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff and PAS' Dr Zulkefli Mohamad.
Returning officer Wan Mustapha Wan Abdul Hamid announced their candidacies at 11am outside the nomination centre at Gua Musang Land and District Office.

Abdul Aziz, 49, was the first to hand in his nomination papers followed by Dr Zulkefli, 44.
Akim president Hanafi Mamat, who had previously indicated that he might contest Galas, was nowhere to be seen.
The nomination process went on smoothly with any untoward incidents despite the presence of thousands of supporters.
Abdul Aziz arrived at the nomination centre at 9.05am accompanied by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen and Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Also accompanying him were Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Umno Supreme Council member who is Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, Kelantan Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
PAS candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamad arrived at 9.30am accompanied by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, his deputy Nasharuddin Mat Isa, vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president Azmin Ali.
Supporters gathered along the road into the nomination centre as early as 7.30am, carrying party flags and banners, to support their respective candidates.
The by-election is called following the death of incumbent Chek Hashim Sulaima, 46, of PAS, on Sept 27.
There are 11,553 voters in Galas comprising 7,125 Malay voters, 2,317 Chinese, 185 Indians, 10 members of the Siamese community and 1,889 Orang Asli.
This is the second by-election in Kelantan after the 2008 by-election. The first was the Manik Urai by-election in July last year. - Bernama

Barisan Nasional’s Abdul Aziz Yusoff and PAS’ Dr Zulkefli Mohamad have declared they will contest the state seat on Nov 4.
